3040. George Mead9 BARTON (Samuel T.8, David7, Caleb6, John5, Caleb4, Samuel3, Matthew2, Edward1) was born in Montpelier, Washington, VT February 18, 1848. George died 19 November 1909 in Boston, Suffolk, MA, at 61 years of age.(1935) His body was interred in Cambridge, MA.

He married Caroline STEEL November 25, 1873 in Wrentham, Norfolk, MA.(1936) The following individual is also linked to this event: W. R. TOMPKINS (minister). Caroline was born August 28, 1844 in Bradford, Merrimack, NH. Caroline was the daughter of Eleazer STEEL and Eunice G. HODGDON. Caroline died June 13, 1916 in Winchester, Middlesex, MA, at 71 years of age.(1937) Her body was interred in Cambridge, MA. Caroline was listed as George Mead BARTON's wife on the 1900 Census in Cambridge, MIddlesex, MA. The following individuals are also linked to this event: Sybil P MILES (mother); George Steel BARTON (son). Caroline was living at 15 Winthrop St. in Winchester when she died. According to her obituary three of her sisters attended the funeral. The home at 189 Western Avenue in Cambridge was sold for back taxes in October of 1917.

George was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census in Cambridge, MIddlesex, MA. George had his will probated December 22, 1909 in Cambridge, MA.(1938) George was the father of two children, only one of whom was living at the time of the 1900 census, George S. who was the executor of his father's estate. At the time of his marriage in 1873 he listed travelling agent as his occupation. In the 1900 census and at his death he was a laundryman living at 189 Western Avenue in Cambridge. There was some confusion as to the location of the marriage. There are two entries in the MA state archives. It seems to have been in Monson at the Congregational Church and the Wrentham entry may be a clerical error. He served in the Civil War, enlisting at age 17 on the 26th of December 1863 into Battery 3 of the Vermont Artillery, was promoted to Corporal and was mustered out on 15 Jan 1865. George was not a very trusting man. In 1887 he loaned his brother in law, George Harvey Steel, $100 and took a mortgage on the Steel farm in Bradford, NH as collateral. The debt seems to have been repaid in 1891 when Steel sold the property. At the time of his death, George was living at 189 Western Avenue, Cambridge, MA.
